Boruto: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Kawaki

Kawaki is one of the main characters in Naruto‘s sequel, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Along with Boruto Uzumaki, Sarada Uchiha, and Mitsuki, he appears to be a crucial character and plays quite a similar role to Sasuke Uchiha in the original Naruto series.

Introduced toward the end of the Ao arc, Kawaki immediately intrigued the fans and has only grown on everyone ever since. His character has been written quite incredibly, however, despite everything, there are quite a few things about him that simply don’t make any sense at the moment.

10 Kawaki Was The Only Child Who Could Handle The Karma

Kawaki was bought from his biological father by Jigen for the purpose of making him a test subject and passing on his Karma to him. Surprisingly, Jigen tried this on several other kids as well and failed every single time. Along with Kawaki, Code was the only other person who managed to survive this experiment, although Code was considered a failed experiment. For some reason, Kawaki was the only one who could handle Isshiki’s Karma despite being a very normal child. It’s unclear what made him survive over the others who failed.

9 Kawaki’s Karma Progression Is Equal To That Of Boruto Uzumaki

Boruto's Karma Mark from the Anime

Kawaki received the Karma when he was a child, and he suffered constantly under Jigen. Every single day, Jigen beat the powers of the Karma into him. Boruto Uzumaki became the vessel of Momoshiki Otsutsuki only recently and according to Isshiki, he has already Otsutsukified up to 80%, which is the same as Kawaki. This doesn’t make sense as Kawaki has had the Karma for much longer and is a much better user of the power than Boruto Uzumaki.

8 Isshiki Has Only Manifested Himself Once In Kawaki

When Kawaki had the Karma, Isshiki Otsutsuki only manifested himself once in his body, and that was when Jigen attacked Naruto in his home. Despite having the power for years, Kawaki never grew the horn that Isshiki Otsutsuki had. At the same time, Momoshiki Otsutsuki has manifested himself three times in Boruto’s body, despite having the Karma for mere months. Once again, given that Kawaki knows much more about the power, this makes absolutely no sense.

7 Kawaki Has Never Used Isshiki Otsutsuki’s Powers

Essentially, the Karma is the back-up of an Otsutsuki, and it slowly enters one’s body when given to them. Kawaki’s body has 80% of Isshiki Otsutsuki’s genetic material and powers within him, meaning he should be able to access some of his powers as well.

However, for some reason, Kawaki has never been seen using even one of Isshiki Otsutsuki’s powers. The only powers that he did use were the ones provided by every single Karma to its users, and this makes no sense at all.

6 Kawaki Doesn’t Fight Like Isshiki Otsutsuki At All

As the Karma has the data of an Otsutsuki stored within it, it makes sense for the bearer to be able to fight like the Otsutsuki whose data they have. Recently, Code confirms that the true power of the Karma lies in the generations of experience that this seal gives to the user, essentially making them fight like the Otsutsuki without even trying. In theory, Boruto Uzumaki should have the exact fighting style as Momoshiki Otsutsuki, and Kawaki should mimic Isshiki Otsutsuki, yet, this isn’t true for the latter.

5 Kawaki Was Never An Inner Of Kara Despite Being A Member

Kawaki was a member of Kara even though he was forcibly being kept there. Eventually, Kawaki escaped, and fans were told that he wasn’t one of the Inners of the group. This was certainly surprising as he possessed power far greater than an Outer of the organization. Kawaki, just like all the Inners, had a Roman numeral on his face, which only the Inners possess. What’s more, his body was modified completely using Scientific Ninja Tools like the other Inners. Yet, Kawaki wasn’t a part of the Inners at all.

4 Kawaki Doesn’t Work As Hard As A Shinobi Should

Kawaki is an extremely powerful character if he relies on the power that the Karma has already given to his body, but he wants to follow the shinobi way. He’s Naruto Uzumaki’s student, and he dreams to become a ninja just like him. Yet, Kawaki doesn’t follow the ninja way at all.

He always looks for shortcuts whereas Naruto Uzumaki worked hard. In fact, perseverance is the essence of a shinobi, and Kawaki, despite wanting to be one of them, does the exact opposite by giving up easily and going with the easy route every time.

3 Kawaki Fights Boruto Uzumaki In The Future For Some Reason

As seen in the prologue of the Boruto story, Kawaki fights Boruto Uzumaki atop the Hokage faces for some reason. The two are at odds with each other and engage in what appears to be a life and death battle. Given their past, this fight makes absolutely no sense as the two are extremely close to each other and share a beautiful bond. For now, there is absolutely no reason as to why Kawaki fights Boruto, although this is something that will likely make sense down the road.

2 Kawaki Sending Naruto Uzumaki Somewhere Doesn’t Make Sense

Kawaki is the only proper student of Naruto Uzumaki, aside from Konohamaru from the Naruto days. He is just like Naruto was as a kid and aspires to become a man like him one day. Yet, in the future, Kawaki goes against everything that Naruto stands for and decides to send him to an unknown place. He claims that the era of shinobi is over, which is something that Naruto Uzumaki protected with his life. While Boruto Uzumaki fights for the shinobi cause, Kawaki appears to oppose it, which makes no sense at all.

1 He Might Play A Role In Konohagakure’s Destruction

In the prologue of the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations series, Kawaki is implied to have played a part in the destruction of Konohagakure. While his exact role in this hasn’t been confirmed just yet, the fact that he stands in Boruto’s way, who happens to be fighting for the shinobi cause, says a lot about which side Kawaki is backing. If he does indeed play a role in the destruction of Konohagakure like the story wants fans to believe, it would make no sense for his character to go down this path.
