He is obsessed with being in the spotlight and dreams of becoming a great warrior, capable of “transcending the gods.” From the start, he is very self-centered and already sees himself as the best meister in school. His wild personality compliments his weapon, Tsubaki, who is much calmer and level-headed. She keeps Black Star grounded and does her best to get him out of trouble.

Ayeka is constantly fighting with Ryoko throughout the series, especially when it comes to Tenchi. Both girls love him, and neither will back down from the other in the quest for his love. Though Ayeka often comes off as very stuck up compared to the other girls, she does mean well and cares very much for her loved ones. She is fiercely protective of those around her, doing anything she can for them.

He originally has no interest in the Shikon Jewel shards, finding the obsession with their power to be pathetic. He feels no need to increase his power with them, seeing this as a means only fit for lesser demons. Though distant, arrogant, and aloof throughout most of the series, he changes slowly. After meeting Jaken, Rin, and then Kohaku, he opens himself to others whom he would have before seen as weak and unworthy of his time.

His arrogance often gets the better of him, getting him into trouble with the other nations. He has an overabundance of pride, referring to himself as “The Awesome Me.”

This big ego of his often plays a comedic role in the series. As a proud and arrogant country, he takes pleasure in bullying the other, weaker countries, getting him into further trouble and starting wars. His goal is to become the greatest nation in the world, which he then passes on to his younger brother, Germany, pushing the younger nation to become just like him.
